HELGA International Division

International activity of Student Union HELGA was developed strongly during year 2009. This was also when HELGA International Division was established.

Division has 3-6 members which are chosen by Student Union board. Division members are normally chosen for a period of one calendar year. If a member starts the activity in the middle of the year, the activity period can even be shorter. HELGA International Responsible chairs the International Division meetings. He/she also coordinates the activity together with HELGA’s Secretary for International Affairs and Tutoring. Division reports its activity to Student Union board regularly.

Three international activity groups work in subordination of International Division. AIESEC promotes students’ internationalization and work placements abroad. ESN-HELGA organizes free time activities and tutoring for exchange students. Activity group IDS (International Degree Students) was established in autumn 2009 to promote international degree students’ position in the student activities. In addition to the three permanent activity groups, Division can set up work groups to take care of different projects.

The main duty of HELGA International Division is to look after the student benefits in the international field. In practice this means e.g. nominating student representatives to HAAGA-HELIA work groups. Division also has the main responsibility to guarantee certain amount of services and events on the international sector. Since the activity groups do the most practical work on arranging events, International Division concentrates on the more “goal oriented organizational work”. For the members this means e.g. coordinating international student activity, information search on topics concerning international students’ welfare, sharing information, marketing and developing international activity in the long run.

Working methods of International Division are decided in the organization meeting which is held as soon as possible after choosing new members. It is wished that the members can participate meetings once a month and also work to develop their own responsibility areas. The working language of International Division is English, even though Student Union’s official language is Finnish.

Activity in divisions is regulated by Student Union HELGA’s Division Compendium (jaosto-ohjesääntö). At the moment the compendium is available in Finnish.
